In this part of our learning series, we are going to tackle the Ethernet. Ethernet is a network standard that is used to connect a number of computer systems to form a local area network (LAN). However, this local area network is controlled by using different protocols that send information to the network for different functions. Now there is a gigabyte standard of Ethernet which sends information across the medium at 100 gigabits per second which are a tremendous speed for LAN networks.
Ethernet is affordable and has a very simple installation process. For example, if the con
sumer buys a data switch and Ethernet cables at the local computer hardware store then all he has to do is to insert the connectors of the cables into each assigned port of the switch, and a basic Ethernet network has already been completed. Ethernet cables and equipment are easily available at any computer hardware store or through an IT service company.
What is Ethernet
There are many other Superfast network protocols available in the industry. Some of them must use Fiber optics and thus its price is much greater than the usual Ethernet network. However, some superfast networks use Modified Ethernet technology such as 100G BaseT Ethernet made the network implementation more affordable. It will be very convenient for the organizations to install BaseT Ethernet and upgrade their existing networks into Superfast Network in the future.
Ethernet gained rapid popularity in the telecom industry because of its simple installation. In the past, IBM Token Ring technology was competing with Ethernet, but the easy implementation of Ethernet defeated IBM Token Ring. Although, Token Ring was capable of faster-transmitting signal speeds which were 16 million bits per second whereas 10BaseT Ethernet had the speed of 10 megabits per second. However, the installation and configuration of IBM Token Ring were very difficult which was a very big disappointment. On the other hand, the installation of Ethernet is easier and less expensive than all other networks. It provides efficient ways to connect across different types of computer systems such as MAC, PC, Linux, Unix, IBM mainframe and much more. This flexibility property made Ethernet more desirable to business organizations.
